Taiwo Akinlami is a LIFETIME PERSONAL AND CORPORATE CHANGE PILGRIM, SELF-MOTIVATED Social Worker and Social Empowerment Advocate, who has witnessed unusual and definite transformation from the seemingly insurmountable impacts of gross childhood abuses. He is the Principal of Taiwo Akinlami INSPIRES Limited and pursues with single-minded passion and tenacious commitment, a mandate received by DIVINE INSPIRATION on Sunday, February 16, 1997 ‘to bring to the front burner of the conscience and consciousness of individuals, private and public institutions in Africa, the rights and responsibilities of the child for due respect IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE CHILD.’While Akinlami’s Child Protection philosophy is ‘Enlightenment is superior to Enforcement,’ his philosophy of life is summed up thus: ‘the world is a marketplace; sacrifices are its rewards.’
A barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Taiwo Akinlami has in the last 8 years been a consultant, facilitator, resource person, contents provider and researcher for UNICEF and its programs on the implementation of the Child’s Rights Act, 2003 and Child Protection. He has also worked as consultant and researcher to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Lagos State, Hope Worldwide Nigeria and USAID on the Assessment of the Child and Family Welfare System in Nigeria. He has worked with UNICEF and Child Rights Information Bureau (CRIB) in the Federal Ministry of Information to mainstream child’s rights education into the curriculum of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ). He has also worked with National Orientation Agency (NOA) in training their workforce and partners on child protection issues.
Akinlami, who is the Secretary-General of Child Protection Network, Lagos State, an initiative of UNICEF has been trained extensively as follows: Essentials of Communication for Development, Training the Trainer Program on the Dissemination of Child’s Rights Education based on the Child’s Rights Act, 2003, (both conducted by UNICEF); Systems Approach to Child Protection issues conducted by Child Frontiers, a leading child protection organisation, based in Hong Kong; Case Documentation of Child Protection, conducted by the United Kingdom-based Bar Human Rights Committee (BHRC).
He believes that in matters of child protection, enlightenment is superior enforcement. Therefore he has dedicated most of his efforts to enlightening children and stakeholders in their lives in matters relating to child protection and development. In the pursuit of enlightenment, he is a passionate, consummate and knowledge-driven trainer, conference and keynote speaker, within and outside Nigeria, who has trained over 15,000 children and young people on their rights and responsibilities and has also educated over 10,000 parents, teachers, policy makers (including top government functionaries and members of States’ and National Assemblies) and other custodians of the child. He has the last 8 years written columns for major Nigerian newspapers including The Punch, BUSINESSDAY, Daily Independent and The Vanguard and has been guest on notable radio and television programs like One-on-One and Am Express, both on Nigerian Television Authority(NTA), just to mention a few.
He has authored 5 handbooks, 6 audio books and 3 e-books predominantly on child protection matters. He writes a daily blog on his website: www.taiwoakinlami.com. His monthly e-newsletter for teachers, The TeacherFIRE™ Revolution Newsletter, which debuted in October 31, 2011, is received by over 4,000 teachers monthly. He intends to take his message of child protection enlightenment to the electronic media as plans are concluded to begin a weekly radio program by the second quarter of 2013.
Specifically in the area of child protection and capacity building for students, teachers and the entire workforce of the private and public school system, Taiwo Akinlami has worked with leading institutions of learning and educational organisations in Nigeria like Grange School, Corona Schools, Chrisland Schools, Ox-bridge Tutorial College, Meadow Hall Schools, Pampers Group of Schools, Association of Private School Educators (APEN), National Association of Proprietors of Private School (NAPPS), Lagos Empowerment and Research Network (L.E.A.R.N), a non-governmental organization initiated by the First Lady of Lagos State, Dame Abimbola Fashola and host of others.
A former Director of Welfare of the Lagos State University Students’ Union Government and National Mobilization Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), he was until recently a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja Branch. He is a Life Member of the Lagos State University Students’ Union Government and Distinguished Unionist of the Year, 1998. Akinlami, who twice (2006 & 2009) in three years been honoured with the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ikeja prestigious Speaker’s Award is happily married to his amiable supportive and resourceful wife, Olawafunmilayo and the family resides in Lagos, Nigeria.
